Microsoft is bringing generative AI to two of Windows’ most familiar tools, rolling out new features in Paint and Notepad that allow users to create AI-generated coloring book pages and enhance text editing, as the company looks to showcase the capabilities of its latest Windows 11 devices.
The updates are being released to Windows Insiders using the Windows 11 Canary and Dev channels. Among the most eye-catching additions is a new “Coloring book” feature in Paint, which lets users generate blank coloring templates from a simple text prompt. By selecting the option from the Copilot menu and describing an image — such as a cartoon animal or fantasy scene — Paint produces multiple black-and-white designs that can be colored digitally or printed.
The feature is currently limited to Copilot Plus PCs, highlighting Microsoft’s push to differentiate AI-powered hardware with creative, consumer-friendly tools. Paint has also received a fill tolerance slider, giving users greater control over how color fills behave, an update available beyond Copilot-specific devices.
Notepad, meanwhile, is gaining streamed AI results for its Write, Rewrite, and Summarize tools, allowing users to preview generated text almost instantly. The lightweight text editor has also been refreshed with a new welcome experience and expanded Markdown support, including strikethrough text and nested lists.
The upgrades reflect Microsoft’s broader strategy to weave AI into everyday computing, transforming even its simplest apps into showcases for generative technology — and hinting at how AI features could shape the future of basic productivity tools on Windows.
