As Eid celebrations continue across Pakistan, a growing number of young people from Generation Z, commonly known as Gen Z, are embracing digital methods to exchange traditional Eid gifts, reflecting a broader shift towards cashless transactions and technology-driven lifestyles.

In offices and software houses, young employees are increasingly sending and receiving “Eidi” — the customary cash gift given during Eid — through mobile wallets instead of physical currency, a trend that observers say highlights changing consumer habits among the country’s tech-savvy youth.

For many members of Gen Z, convenience and speed have become central to how they celebrate festivals, with smartphones replacing envelopes and banknotes that once symbolised the tradition.

Changing workplace traditions

At several workplaces in Islamabad, young professionals were seen exchanging Eid greetings and transferring money to colleagues using mobile applications, with transactions completed within seconds.

Employees say digital payments have simplified the process of giving Eidi, particularly in office environments where carrying cash is becoming less common.

“It’s faster and more convenient to send Eidi digitally,” said a young software developer working at a local technology firm.

“We can transfer money instantly, and the receiver gets a notification right away.”
Industry observers note that the trend reflects the broader digital transformation underway in Pakistan, where mobile-based financial services are expanding rapidly, particularly among younger users.

Technology shaping festive habits

Digital payment platforms have reported increased transaction volumes during religious festivals, as consumers turn to mobile wallets for routine financial activities.

According to JazzCash, the demand for instant transfers typically rises during Eid, when families and friends exchange gifts and monetary tokens.

Khayyam Siddiqui, a representative of the company, said the introduction of faster transfer features such as SpEidi has made digital gifting more accessible to users.

“During Eid, we observe a noticeable increase in digital transactions, particularly among younger customers,” he said.
“Features like SpEidi that allow instant transfers enable users to send money quickly and securely, which makes the process of giving Eidi more convenient.”

A step towards a digital economy

Economists and technology experts say the growing reliance on digital payments by younger generations could support Pakistan’s transition towards a more formal and documented economy.

They argue that increased adoption of mobile wallets not only improves financial inclusion but also reduces dependence on cash transactions, particularly in urban centres. With smartphones becoming an integral part of daily life, members of Gen Z are redefining traditional customs in ways that align with their digital habits.
