ISLAMABAD:
Photo-sharing platform Instagram has begun testing a long-requested feature allowing creators to add clickable links directly in post captions, marking a potential shift in how users share content and external websites on the platform.
The feature, confirmed by parent company Meta Platforms, is currently being rolled out to a small group of creators subscribed to Meta Verified, the company’s paid verification service. Participants in the test can reportedly add up to 10 clickable links per month in their post captions.
The trial represents a notable change for Instagram, which for years avoided clickable links in captions. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, previously argued that allowing links in posts could shift the platform away from its core focus on visual storytelling and move it toward publisher-style content.
Under the current test, only personal and professional creator accounts are eligible, while business and publisher accounts remain excluded. The restriction appears designed to prevent brands and news organisations from flooding feeds with outbound links.
Meta said the test follows strong demand from its subscriber community. The company has increasingly promoted Meta Verified — a paid service costing roughly $15 per month — as a way to unlock additional features for creators.
The subscription offering has also become an important revenue stream. Meta reported that its “Other” revenue category, which includes subscription income, generated $801 million in the fourth quarter of 2025, reflecting significant growth since Meta Verified launched in 2023.
Industry analysts say caption links could create new monetisation opportunities for creators. Brands that cannot add links from their own accounts could collaborate with verified creators to promote websites or campaigns through sponsored posts.
For now, the test remains limited and capped, but if expanded globally it could represent one of the biggest changes to Instagram’s content ecosystem, potentially reshaping how creators, brands and audiences interact on the platform.
