ISLAMABAD:
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said on Tuesday that Pakistan’s efforts to launch the long-awaited 5G spectrum auction had finally materialised, describing the development as a major step toward strengthening the country’s digital economy and technological landscape.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony of the 5G spectrum auction in Islamabad, Aurangzeb said the government had developed a comprehensive ecosystem to support the rollout of next-generation mobile services.
“The efforts regarding the 5G auction have succeeded today,” the finance minister said, adding that the government had worked to ensure the necessary regulatory and technological framework for the transition.
Aurangzeb noted that 5G technology would unlock numerous use cases across sectors, enabling Pakistan to move toward emerging industries such as Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence.
He said improved digital infrastructure would help expand Pakistan’s IT sector and increase exports. “The spectrum auction will contribute to the growth of IT exports and strengthen the digital economy,” he said.
Referring to recent government initiatives, the minister said Shehbaz Sharif had announced measures such as online classes and work-from-home arrangements to ensure continuity of activities during periods of regional tensions.
“Such measures highlight the importance of reliable connectivity,” Aurangzeb said, stressing that adequate spectrum availability was essential to support expanding digital services.
He added that the 5G spectrum auction would significantly improve connectivity across the country, paving the way for faster internet speeds, innovation, and greater digital inclusion.
